A Bao A Qu ( The Turning Step )

from Pteranodon by Alan Lambert

/

lyrics

THE TURNING STEP

It lies dormant on the first step
Until some secret life is touched
Deep within it light begins to glow
When you start up the spiralling stairs
Then the creature wakes
And in its pursuit it sticks close
To the visitor’s heels

On the turning step

Most worn by pilgrims
At each turning step
The creature’s colour grows
Especially when the climber
Casts no shadows
But it hangs back before the top
Its moan like the rustling of silk
And its life span is brief
As it wheels and tumbles to the first step

On the turning step

In centuries the A Bao A Qu
Has only reached the terrace ( of the tower of victory ) once
